22–23 June 2020: coronavirus situation tracker for Kenyan informal settlements

Topline summary for 22–23 June:

  • Reports of cases isolated to two settlements in Nairobi: Korogocho and Mathare.

  • There has been low prevalence of testing in Nyalenda (Kisumu), all Nairobi settlements except Kibera, and Naivasha (Nakuru).

  • Deaths have been reported in Obunga (Kisumu), Kwa Njenga, Kwa Reuben and Mathare (Nairobi).

  • ‘What is being done’ simple index is remaining constant with all settlements reporting some levels of activities.

  • Low numbers of isolation centres are being reported in Korogocho, Kwa Njenga, Mathare and Viwandani (Nairobi), with more significant reports in Naivasha (Nakuru).

  • Reports of information activities (information on coronavirus, awareness-raising activities, and information on government directives) are strong in Kisumu settlements, moderately strong across Nairobi, but no reports of adequate information activities in Nakuru county settlement of Naivasha.

  • Korogocho is reporting a prevalence of social distancing and restriction of particular people’s movements, but Mathare is reporting very low to no numbers on these indicators.

  • All settlements reporting some level of basic needs support for vulnerable and non-vulnerable people, except Manyatta which is only reporting for vulnerable people, and Naivasha which reports no support for either.

  • PPE and hygiene numbers on average are strongest around provision of water supply, public handwashing facilities and soap and hand sanitizer across all settlements, but numbers remain relatively low.

The information in this report was collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji from residents of informal settlements in the Counties of Nairobi, Kisumu and Nakuru. We are aiming to collect information and report on it every 2-3 days throughout the crisis.

The data presented in this report captures the situation of the coronavirus pandemic in urban Kenya. It presents the picture on the 2-3 days before the report’s date. Information was collected by Muungano wa Wanavijiji and SDI Kenya from community mobilizers living in informal settlements in the counties listed. Mobilizers were asked to interview 5 people in their village and provide their responses using an online survey. Mobilizers were compensated for the cost of their phone data used.
